Below are the questions with the councillor’s response.

YOUR CANDIDATE ALBERT DOHERTY
QUESTIONS: AS A PUBLIC REPRESENTATIVE CANDIDATE FOR DONEGAL WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE TO OFFER?  RESPONSES: I have been a community and political activist in Carndonagh and Inishowen for a long number of years. I was elected as a county councillor for the Inishowen electoral area between 1999 & 2004 and served as county council vice-chairperson in 2001/2002. I am the principal teacher in St.Patrick’s Boys N.S. in Carndonagh.I have a keen interest in trade union affairs and is secretary of the Carndonagh/Moville INTO branch and is on the INTO Standing Orders Committee representing Donegal and Leitrim.
IF ELECTED WILL YOU WORK TOWARDS UPHOLDING AND PROMOTING THE ETHOS OF SOCIAL INCLUSION, EQUALITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS? YES
CHILDCARE
QUESTION: THE COST OF CHILDCARE IN DONEGAL HAS RECENTLY BEEN PROVED TO ACT AS A BARRIER TO LOW INCOME WORKING FAMILIES TO EITHER REMAIN IN OR TAKE UP EMPLOYMENT. WITH AN AVERAGE COST FOR 2 CHILDREN IN FULL TIME DAY CARE EQUATING TO €16,500 PER YEAR AFTER TAX – WHAT WILL YOU DO TO ADDRESS THIS SITUATION AT POLICY LEVEL IN DONEGAL? RESPONSE: I will be campaigning for government to invest in quality, accessible and affordable child care for all. The long term aim must be to establish a universal provision of early childhood care and education based on the best international models. This could and should be free at the point of delivery. In the interim the one year free childcare must be expanded. It has proven to be hugely successful. It makes social and economic sense. Investing in childcare is investing in our economic future.
CARERS
QUESTION:  IN LIGHT OF THE MANY CUTS TO SERVICES I.E. HOME HELPS, SPECIAL NEEDS ASSISTANTS AND PERSONAL ASSISTANTS, WHAT WILL YOU DO TO ADDRESS THIS SITUATION AT A POLICY LEVEL IN DONEGAL? RESPONSE: The cuts imposed on carers by the current Fine Gael/Labour Government are nothing short of reprehensible, in particular the cut to the respite care grant.Carers save the state over four billion euro each year. If those they care for are pushed into full-time residential care that will cost the state several times what it has saved through its cuts. As regards SNA’s the Government has refused to allow the service develop to service the growing need.If elected I will use my position to lobby for greater supports for those who care for others.
DOMESTIC ABUSE + VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
QUESTIONS: HAVE YOU OR WILL YOU SIGN UP TO THE MAN-UP CAMPAIGN?  RESPONSES: YES
WILL YOU UNDERTAKE A HALF DAY WORKSHOP IN 2014 ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE? YES
DONEGAL WOMEN’S DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SERVICE HAS RECENTLY EXPANDED THE NUMBER OF ACCOMMODATION UNITS IT SUPPLIES YET THERE HAS BEEN NO FURTHER INCREASE IN FUNDING FROM DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL.  HOW WILL YOU ADDRESS THIS? I will support demands for increased funding for Domestic Violence services in Donegal.
LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER (LGBT)
QUESTION: IN THE UPCOMING REFERENDUM ON SAME SEX MARRIAGE, WHAT ACTIONS WILL YOU TAKE TO ENSURE A BALANCED DEBATE IN DONEGAL? RESPONSE: I believe the upcoming referendum campaign should be conducted in a dignified and respectful manner.
TRAVELLERS
QUESTION:  WHAT WILL YOU DO TO ENSURE FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL TRAVELLER ACCOMMODATION 2014-2018 PLAN? RESPONSE: If elected I will use my position on the County Council to ensure that plans are delivered on.
WOMEN’S POLITICAL  REPRESENTATION
QUESTIONS: DO YOU SUPPORT THE 5050 CAMPAIGN TO SECURE EQUAL POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN IRELAND? RESPONSES: YES
IF NO PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY. NA
WHAT ACTIONS WILL YOU TAKE WITHIN YOUR PARTY OR AS AN INDEPENDENT TO ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT AT LEAST 30% FEMALE PARTICIPATION IN THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION? Sinn Fein are committed to achieving increased female participation in elections and Sinn Fein will have approximately 30% women candidates in this election.I will use my role as a representative to encourage more women to join Sinn Fein and to stand for election.
EQUALITY IN DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL
QUESTIONS: DO YOU AGREE THAT DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL SHOULD BE MORE FAMILY FRIENDLY FOR ITS ELECTED COUNCILLORS? RESPONSES: YES
WHAT ACTIONS WILL YOU TAKE TO ENSURE THIS CHANGE? If elected I will work with colleagues to ensure Donegal County Council is a more family friendly environment for elected members. Issues such as the timing of meetings etc. will have to be considered.
