Joseph McNulty

Donegal, Independent

Joseph McNThe National Women’s Collective – Donegal Women’s Network sent an ‘Open Invitation’ to all 2014 local election candidates to respond to questions that have been identified as areas of concern by voters in Donegal.

Each candidate was  invited to respond and to pledge to undertake specific actions if they are successful and elected onto Donegal County Council.

This we believe will give the electorate an insight into each candidate as well as giving the candidates an open forum which could be helpful in securing votes.

CHILDCARE
QUESTION

THE COST OF CHILDCARE IN DONEGAL HAS RECENTLY BEEN PROVED TO ACT AS A BARRIER TO LOW INCOME WORKING FAMILIES TO EITHER REMAIN IN OR TAKE UP EMPLOYMENT. WITH AN AVERAGE COST FOR 2 CHILDREN IN FULL TIME DAY CARE EQUATING TO €16,500 PER YEAR AFTER TAX – WHAT WILL YOU DO TO ADDRESS THIS SITUATION AT POLICY LEVEL IN DONEGAL?

RESPONSE

As a parent I understand that this can be a real barrier to getting and keeping full time employment. When elected I will endeavour to increase the threshold where families can avail of the free preschool scheme. If parents decided to place their children in a child care centre that the cost be written off against their tax liabilities. Also where possible I am a great believer in the help of the extended family and I believe this should be financially supported by government

CARERS
QUESTION

IN LIGHT OF THE MANY CUTS TO SERVICES I.E. HOME HELPS, SPECIAL NEEDS ASSISTANTS AND PERSONAL ASSISTANTS, WHAT WILL YOU DO TO ADDRESS THIS SITUATION AT A POLICY LEVEL IN DONEGAL?

RESPONSE

I will use all my power to vote against these cuts. I will campaign to stop and reverse these policies. I will lobby all parties and elected members and I will protest as I believe this cuts are unfair and unjust against the most vulnerable in our society. It is impossible to care for and give adequate services to the person in need of these services in the allowed time.

The Government know that the carer or teacher will give freely of their time to these people as they will have built up a relationship. I am accusing the Government of sharp practice and abusing the home help, special needs assistants and personal assistants by taking advantage of their good nature.

These policies are putting strain on these relationships and making it awkward for both parties involved. In the end this will cost more as the stress builds and resentment sets in. Relationships breaks down and causes hardship and sadness to all involved. This is not how I wish to treat our people,- they deserve better

DOMESTIC ABUSE + VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
QUESTIONS

HAVE YOU OR WILL YOU SIGN UP TO THE MAN-UP CAMPAIGN?

RESPONSES

YES

WILL YOU UNDERTAKE A HALF DAY WORKSHOP IN 2014 ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE? YES
DONEGAL WOMEN’S DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SERVICE HAS RECENTLY EXPANDED THE NUMBER OF ACCOMMODATION UNITS IT SUPPLIES YET THERE HAS BEEN NO FURTHER INCREASE IN FUNDING FROM DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL.  HOW WILL YOU ADDRESS THIS? I will research this information. I will visit Donegal Women’s Domestic Violence and get first-hand information, and on the ground experience of all your needs, and have same costed. In the 2015 Budget I will insist and lobby all other representatives to have adequate funds to cover running costs included. Also I will research the setting up of a community scheme to help with the daily chores or enlist the help of voluntary workers until we get to better times
LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER (LGBT)
QUESTION

IN THE UPCOMING REFERENDUM ON SAME SEX MARRIAGE, WHAT ACTIONS WILL YOU TAKE TO ENSURE A BALANCED DEBATE IN DONEGAL?

RESPONSE

This issue needs to be debated and talked about in every forum available to let people express their opinions without the fear of liable action or people taking offence. This will create a situation (similar to Dail privilege,) where we the people can get to the heart of the issue and all fears and prejudices can be highlighted and trashed out. The only result from this debate is an informed and educated solution. We realise that we live in a diverse society where one size does not fit all. We, as a society must make allowances for differences and be prepared to accommodate all so that we can benefit and enjoy life.

TRAVELLERS
QUESTION

WHAT WILL YOU DO TO ENSURE FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL TRAVELLER ACCOMMODATION 2014-2018 PLAN?

RESPONSE

I will familiarize myself with this plan, and as these issues arise at council level, I will consider each situation on their own merit. I will take all views on board and do my best to resolve all issues, giving people their entitlement to their human rights and dignity. I will negotiate and try to build bridges between both sides of these communities. We all know that each community has rights and wants to live according to their customs where each side respects the other.

WOMEN’S POLITICAL  REPRESENTATION
QUESTIONS

DO YOU SUPPORT THE 5050 CAMPAIGN TO SECURE EQUAL POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN IRELAND?

RESPONSES

YES

IF NO PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY. NA
WHAT ACTIONS WILL YOU TAKE WITHIN YOUR PARTY OR AS AN INDEPENDENT TO ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT AT LEAST 30% FEMALE PARTICIPATION IN THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION? Women represent 50% of our population, and I believe they should be given the opportunity to express their views as they are different than men. Women have a different approach and come up with different solutions and alternatives. We need women at the top table and involved in the decision making to make a fairer society and a society where everyone involved benefits. Equality in ourCouncil will help us achieve equality in the rest of our society. The council should become a model for a modern, inclusive workplace
EQUALITY IN DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL
QUESTIONS

DO YOU AGREE THAT DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL SHOULD BE MORE FAMILY FRIENDLY FOR ITS ELECTED COUNCILLORS?

RESPONSES

YES

WHAT ACTIONS WILL YOU TAKE TO ENSURE THIS CHANGE? Family is the core of our society and it must be protected. Working life must come second and it must accommodate all the family needs. In today’s fast pace work environment more pressure is placed on the family as it takes two wages now to cover the basic needs. It would be much better for society as a whole if this could be achieved through shorter worker hours and flexi time. Where possible work could be done from the home. In my view a parent is the primary teacher. It should be encourage and supported for the children to spend as much time as possible at home within the family unit. Life is for living. Work is for maintaining a standard of living.
DO YOU AGREE GENDER EQUALITY IS A FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE UNDERPINNING THE CONCEPT OF SOCIAL JUSTICE, AND HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS IN IRELAND? YES
